Harnessing Colour from Nature
Sunday, Feb 18, 2024 | 1pm – 4pm
Did you know that gorgeous hues can be obtained safely from nature? Like a golden yellow from marigold flower or a rosy pink from avocado pits? Up until the 1850’s, natural dyes were used globally on textiles for several millennia. Get reacquainted with the fascination of obtaining dyes from various sources, something your ancestors surely knew about. Harnessing dyes from nature creates a deep understanding and connection with life source. An art of working with Nature rather than against it.
In this 3-hour interactive workshop, you will gain some knowledge and process of textile dyeing with natural materials. You will understand the difference between “cellulose” and “protein” fibres, and how they take on the dyes. There will be an introduction to Shibori, the Japanese art of manipulating fabric to create patterns through the dye process. You will be guided to dye a silk viscose scarf, using shibori or dip-dye technique, which you will take home with you. This meditative process will provide you an understanding why our (re)connection with Nature is imperative to our consumer choices, and in particular, clothing. An art of crafting alongside Nature rather than against it. All materials will be included, including your silk viscose scarf, which has been finished with a beautiful frayed edge and prepared to take the dye.
By participating in this workshop, you are taking steps towards understanding slow textiles, advocating a movement of craftsmanship that is timeless, local, and sustainable.

Indigo Dyeing + Shibori
March 24 date has been cancelled
In this 3-hour interactive workshop, you will gain some knowledge and process of textile dyeing with natural materials. There will be an introduction to Shibori, the Japanese art of manipulating fabric to create patterns through the dye process. You will be guided to dye a linen textile 17.5” x 42”, which you take home with you. This textile has been finished with a beautiful frayed edge and has been prepared to take the dye.
Watch how your dyed piece turns from green to blue as it is taken out of the vat and introduced to oxygen. Re-dip as necessary and if time allows, to achieve darker shades. This meditative process will provide you an understanding why our (re)connection with Nature is imperative to our consumer choices, and in particular, clothing. An art of crafting alongside Nature rather than against it. All materials will be included, including your linen textile. This can be used as a wall hanging, table runner, scarf, or transformed into something such as a tote bag, or cushion cover.
